About 4 years ago the son who is a heck of mechanic put on new brakes, drums, shoes, hardware, master cyl and vacuum booster, new fuel tank. He bought the car in 1972 from a woman and the car has basically sat in a unheated building for the last 40 years, maybe only driven 20 miles in the last 30 years. There may be a new engine part but I am not verse enough on Thunderbirds to tell. This is basically an unrestored original car. My friend's 87 year old father is willing to sell me his 1961 Thunderbird Convertible that has 44,584 original miles. I have learned a lot and found so much good information. The seller notes that rear axle bearings, seals, and fluid have been replaced and the factory valve covers are included in the sale.I registered for the forums several weeks ago and have read almost all the posts for 1961-63. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a Cruise-O-Matic three-speed automatic transmission which is said to have been recently refurbished. A refurbished Bendix starter is fitted, and the factory radiator is said to have been re-cored. Recent service is said to have included refurbishment of the carburetor, and replacement of the timing chain and gears, oil pressure sender, belts, and the fuel pump, lines, sender, filler neck, and tank as well as the water pump, thermostat, coolant hoses, ignition coil, spark plugs, ignition wires, distributor cap and rotor, and the battery and cables. The 390ci V8 was factory rated at 300 horsepower and 427 lb-ft of torque and features chrome valve covers and a Pertronix electronic ignition. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 47k miles, approximately 500 of which were added under current ownership. The three-spoke steering wheel frames a 120-mph speedometer, a combination gauge for fuel and coolant temperature, and an analog clock. A seam has split on the top of the back seat. Work completed under previous ownership is said to have included re-dying the seats, dash, console, and door panels, replacing the carpets, aluminum dash panels, sill plates, door handles and actuators, driver and passenger window motors, rear package tray, and heater box ducting as well as installing of aluminized padding in the interior and trunk. Equipment includes red carpets, power-operated windows, a push-button radio, a heater, and a swing-away steering column. The cabin features bucket seats upholstered in red vinyl with aluminum trim accenting the matching dashboard, center console, and door panels. Additional work reportedly included replacement of the wheel bearings and seals, power steering pressure hose, and rear shocks. Power-assisted steering is installed, and stopping power is provided by power-assisted drum brakes which are said to have been recently serviced with replacement brake shoes and hardware, hoses, wheel cylinders, and a master cylinder as well as refurbishing the brake booster and turning the drums. Features include a chrome grille, bumpers, and trim, a hood scoop, rear fender skirts, and dual side mirrors.īlack 14″ steel wheels wear polished factory covers and are fitted with whitewall tires. The Thunderbird was re-styled for 1961, and this example was refinished in white in 1994 under previous ownership. This Thunderbird is offered with service records and a clean Colorado title in the seller’s name. Equipment includes chrome bumpers and trim, rear fender skirts, power-assisted steering and brakes, power windows, a push-button AM radio, and a swing-away steering column. Work in November 2021 included replacement of the brakes, suspension components, cooling system, carpets, interior trim, and fuel system components as well as re-dying of the upholstery and rebuilding the transmission and carburetor. The car is said to have been registered in Colorado since new and was acquired by the seller in June 2021 from the family of the reported original owner. This 1961 Ford Thunderbird two-door hardtop is finished in white over red vinyl and powered by a 390ci V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission.
